Since September 2019, Ryhope Junior School has worked alongside North East Ambition as part of the Careers Benchmark Primary Pilot aiming to raise the career ambitions and aspirations of each and every child in our school community.


The Pilot scheme works towards 8 key benchmarks which include: embedding Careers and Personal Development into our school, life and curriculum and engaging with employers and other education providers to ensure high aspirations for all.

We are working alongside the Skills Builder Partnership and are aiming to achieve our Gold Award in recognition of our work in schools towards raising the aspirations of our children.


Ryhope Junior School works with The Skills Builder Partnership to ensure every learner has opportunities to build eight essential skills to support them now and in the future. Research has shown that building these eight essential skills can support the emotional wellbeing and academic success of children and young people, as well as preparing them for life beyond school. Skills Builder has developed a Universal Framework that breaks each of these essential skills down into 16 teachable steps. We use this framework to teach and practise each of the eight skills at the appropriate level throughout school life.


Each month, a new 'Skill of the Month' is launched in our Shine assembly. Our October Skill has been 'Staying Positive' where every class has thought about ways in which we can stay positive when things go wrong. Home learning tasks have been added to Showbie, our online learning platform, which families have been able to take part in together.
