School Clubs
|
School clubs are learning activities outside normal lessons which children take part in voluntarily. Their purpose is to improve children's motivation, build their self-esteem and help them become more effective learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement and showcase their talents. The extra-curricular activities programme that we offer at Ryhope Junior School has the primary aim of encouraging children to be involved in a variety of different activities and opportunities, that the National Curriculum does not offer. In addition to this, they learn to co-operate and interact with other children who are not in their class, as well as learning the responsibilities involved in being a member of a club. The activities take place during lunchtimes and after school. The clubs are organised and supervised by members of staff who do so voluntarily. Some activities require the skills of outside agencies, who organise activities under the supervision of a member of staff. We hope that participation in the extra-curricular activities helps the children to become both independent and responsible individuals, who understand what is involved in being a member of a team or club. We remind the children of the importance of commitment in any of the activities that they are involved in and regular attendance is also expected. |

Recorder Club
Recorder Club takes place on Tuesdays from 12.30—12.55 pm with Mrs Thompson and Mrs Skelton for children in Year 6. The children learn how to play the recorder as well as learning the skill of reading music. They perform regularly in school assemblies and in the Christmas and end of term concerts. We also take part in the Sunderland Schools' Recorder Day every year. This gives the children the opportunity to play a variety of pieces of music, and to perform to a wider audience. We play a variety of different types of music. Recorders are provided by the school for those children who don't have a recorder of their own. |

Computer Club
Mr Simpson’s Computer Club for Year 6 children takes place on Wednesdays from 3.20– 4.30 pm in the computer suite. The children produce work for the school website as well as work for display in school. They are taught how to use a number of different programs and software packages and, as a result, have become more confident and competent at using computers. These skills can then be transferred to their ICT lessons |

| We hope to offer the following activities in the Spring or Summer terms:
Year 5 & 6 Rugby Club In the Spring and Summer terms a rugby club will be starting for Year 5 & 6 children. The children will be introduced to the basic skills required to play tag rugby and also take part in local, regional and national competition. Tennis Club In the Summer term I am hoping to introduce a tennis club to the programme of activities offered in school. A coach from the Puma Tennis Centre will work with Year 3 and 4 children, teaching them the basic skills and techniques used in the game of tennis. I am hoping to have secured a grant to pay for this club, but if not a nominal fee will be required from those children taking part. |
